Meet Dr. Jarrahy

As the former President of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr. Jarrahy’s expertise extends beyond just the upper and lower jaw. Instead, he offers a uniquely holistic approach to surgery to create harmony in the craniofacial skeleton. While few oral surgeons in NJ even perform orthognathic jaw surgeries, Dr. Jarrahy also makes this option more accessible by partnering with most major insurance companies, including Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Dr. Jarrahy specializes in pediatric plastic surgery and aesthetic surgery and serves as a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He was mentored by Dr. Henry Kawamoto, one of the original pioneers of modern craniofacial surgery, through the prestigious UCLA Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship program. Today, Dr. Jarrahy is recognized as an exceptionally skilled surgeon in jaw correction surgery. As Dr. Jarrahy himself says: “It’s a complicated procedure, and you want a sophisticated surgeon.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthognathic Jaw Surgery

What are the benefits of orthognathic surgery?
During your consultation, a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in microsurgery will carefully evaluate your medical history, current health status, and body type. They’ll discuss your goals and expectations, examine your abdominal area to ensure sufficient tissue is available, and explain the procedure in detail. This is your opportunity to ask any questions and address any concerns.
What is the recovery process like?
Recovery from orthognathic surgery typically takes 6–12 weeks for full healing. Swelling and discomfort are common in the first few weeks, and patients may need to follow a liquid or soft-food diet.
Are there risks or complications associated with the surgery?
Like any surgery, orthognathic procedures carry risks, including infection, bleeding, nerve damage, or issues with jaw alignment. However, these risks are rare when performed by an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
How long does the entire treatment process take?
Orthognathic surgery is part of a comprehensive treatment plan, often involving orthodontics before and after the procedure. The full process may take 1–3 years, depending on the complexity of the case and the patient's healing progress.
